By the beginning of 1940 the war between Nazi Germany and the Anglo-French alliance was already entering its fifth month, but since the fall of Poland there had been scant significant tests to either side on the battlefield. This all rapidly changed in the spring of 1940, during which France and the Benelux countries fell to the Nazis, and the British army retreated back across the Channel.

In History of War issue 81, two tank experts reveal how in only a few days German Panzer divisions succeeded in breaking Allied lines, during the most critical operation of the Second World War. In doing so these mostly diminutive but nonetheless highly effective war machines had redrawn maps and changed the course of history. Tank veteran and Wargaming representative Richard Cutland explains why the Panzer II is wrongly maligned in most history books, while Richard Willey, curator of the Bovington Tank Museum, analyses how German armoured doctrine became so formidable in the years since the First World War.

Also this issue, you will discover how Nazi paratroopers captured the fortress of Eben-Emael using a daring glider assault. Historian Craig Moore explains how this operation, which was the first successful use of gliders in a major offensive, successfully neutralised Belgium's key fortification, spelling disaster for the nation's defences.

Issue 81's Great Battles recounts the Battle of Leuthen (1757), where outnumbered Prussians attempted to outmanoeuvre an Austrian force. In our regular Frontline section you can discover the Great Northern War, which saw the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire, as it took on a resurgent Russia under Peter the Great.

Elsewhere you'll find an excellent analysis of the Battle of Midway by renowned historian James Holland; our regular Operator's Handbook takes a look inside the AH-64 Apache Longbow; plus all the latest books and films reviewed.
